Common Questions About Buying Gold Bars

Have questions about investing in gold bars? Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions that we receive about our gold bars. If you have any other questions or just want to speak to someone about your first gold purchase, our team of experts are standing by to help!

After gold has been mined or panned, gold bars are made one of two ways- casting or minting.

Gold cast bars are made by manufacturers pouring molten gold into molds. Each casted gold bar varies in appearance due to how the gold is poured and then cools. Some gold bar buyers prefer casted bars because of the more “natural” look poured gold bars give off.

On the other hand, minted gold bars are hand-cut from large, flat sheets of pressed gold. They are individually finished with a gloss coating and stamped with artistic designs. From there, manufacturers typically place each bar in a sealed assay card to protect them from tarnishing.

Sealed assay cards are a way to protect gold bars, as well as official documentation of the bar’s weight and purity. Usually, they include a serial number that lines with the production location.

With 1 oz being the most popular gold bar, there is a myriad of private mints worldwide that produce gold bars.

Some of the most common gold bar producers are:

  • PAMP Suisse
  • Valcambi Suisse
  • Credit Suisse
  • Perth Mint
  • Sunshine Mint
  • Scottsdale Mint
  • Royal Canadian Mint
  • Royal Mint of England
  • Argor-Heraeus
  • Asahi Refining

It’s important to note that the U.S. Mint does not manufacture gold bars.

Gold bars come in four different sizes. The standard gold bar weighs 400 ounces, or approximately 27.5 pounds, and is the size of a brick.

Investment gold bars are significantly lighter. With three different weight options, you can choose to best suit your portfolio needs.

  • 1 oz gold bar, which weighs in at 1.097 oz.
  • 10 oz gold bar, which weighs in at 10.97 ounces.
  • 1-kilo gold bar, which weighs in at a little over 2.2 pounds.

Apart from an assortment of gold bar sizes and weights, gold bars are pressed with various designs. Some of the more popular 1 oz gold bars artistic designs include:

  • Royal Mint Britannia Gold Bars
  • Royal Canadian Mint Maple Leaf Gold Bars
  • Rand Refinery Gold Bars
  • Perth Mint Swan Gold Bars
  • Sunshine Mint Eagle Gold Bars

The “fineness” of gold is essentially the purity in parts per thousand. In simplest terms, if a piece of gold were to be divided into 1000 parts, the fineness would express how many of those pieces were pure gold. In jewelry, the fineness is referred to as karats, with 24k gold bars being 100% pure gold.

In terms of investments, the most commonly sought-after fineness is 999. Because achieving pure gold outside a lab setting is difficult, 999 is considered the purest gold bar possible.

Absolutely! Gold has only increased in value since it first became a commodity for investment. Like any other investment, it can fluctuate over time, but the  overall trajectory of gold’s price has only seen positive growth.

Especially with the precious metals industry and precious metals investing, we can only predict that gold will continue to impress investors and us.

Gold has been considered a safe haven investment during distressing times, as it’s a hedge against inflation and stocks. When the stock market decreases, gold’s value tends to increase. Holding on to physical gold or investing it in a gold IRA is one of the safest long-term investments you can make.

There are two ways that you can invest in gold bars. One is to buy gold bars and store them in your home or a secured depository. The second option is to buy gold in a precious metals IRA, which gives you additional tax benefits.
