Coin History

The Gold Kangaroo Coins, also known as Australian Nuggets, are pure gold coins produced by Perth Mint in Australia. They are known for their unique features that have successfully increased their market value, and the design of the coin is one of those distinguishing features. Since it was first produced in 1986, the coin has had an engraving of a side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, and the reverse of the coin has the portrait of a kangaroo engraved on it. Another interesting fact is that the picture of kangaroos in the tail of the coin are always different every year, making the Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin one of the very few coins that change designs every year. The exception to this annual change in design is found in the 2oz, 10oz and 1kg denominations, which all have a red kangaroo engraved on the reverse since they were first produced in 1991. These designs are credited to Ian Rank-Broadley. One more thing that contributes to the coin’s high market value is that it is only produced in limited quantities annually.

There are nine denominations of the Austrian Gold Kangaroo and they are 1/20oz, 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, 1oz, 2oz, 10oz, 1kg and 1 ton. These denominations all vary in their weights, dimensions and face value which range from $5 to $1,000,000 as the weight increases. But up till 1991, the 2oz, 10oz and 1kg denominations had $500, $2500 and $10000 face values before they were lowered to $200, $1000 and $3000 in 1992. These three coins are without doubt some of the largest coins that have ever hit the market. However, this didn’t deter Perth Mint from producing the biggest ever coin ever made in size, weight and market value, the 1tonne denomination of the Australian Nuggets. All of these denominations are accepted as legal tender everywhere in Australia.

History of gold

The allure of gold has fired the human imagination for centuries. When looking at the gold narrative, what strikes us, is the remoteness of the ancient examples commonly used – and we thought it was time to bring the story of gold up to date and to make it more local.
